The overwhelming response from both the faculty and student community with their constructive suggestions has necessiated to bring out the seventh edition of this book. The book has been thoroughly revised in view of the comments received and rewritten at some places for the sake of clarity. The unique feature of this edition is the inclusion of the syllabus for M.Tech./M.E. courses on optical communication of various universities. The need for upgradation was obvious as I was teaching regular M.Tech. classes on optical communication as a course in Electronics and Communication Engineering at P.D.M. college of Engineering, Sarai Aurangabad, Bhadurgarh, Haryana. The book will cover basic material for both B.Tech. and M. Tech. students covering theory as well as application of optical fiber technology. It can also serve as reference material for those interested in optical fiber communication design system. On popular demand a portion on overview of analog links has been added as also a new chapter incorporated to include active optical components, optical amplifiers and performance measurements and monitoring. The book is expected to be received very well by the faculty and the students like the earlier editions. Constructive suggestion for further upgradation of the book are most welcome.
